The Connecticut General Assembly’s committees that write the budget and draft taxes have little more than a week to vote on a legislative response to Governor Dannel P. Malloy’s two-year, $40 billion budget proposal, the Associated Press reported.

The Legislature’s Appropriations Committee has to decide whether or not to pass a spending plan by April 26. According to the Connecticut Office of Protection and Advocacy for Persons with Disabilities, the appropriations committee had originally planned to vote on the budget bill today, but are instead expected to decide sometime this week because offices will be closed due to Good Friday, Easter and Passover.

The Finance Revenue and Bonding Committee must vote on a t ax package by April 27. The finance committee has been garnering attention because it is expected to raise taxes by $1.5 billion to help cover the estimated $3.3 billion deficit. These taxes would be raised for the new budget year starting July 1. Senate President Donald Williams has said he expects Malloy’s overall framework to remain in its current state.
