• A federal investigation into whether the University has violated Title IX has not impacted prospective students’ decision about matriculating at Yale.

  Of 17 prospective students interviewed during Bulldog Days — the University’s three-day event to welcome admitted students — only two said the investigation will play a part in their decision to accept Yale’s offer of admission. Most said they believe sexual harassment to be a universal issue on college campuses.

• Just hours after the tragic death of Michele Dufault ’11 last week, the University and the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration announced investigations into potentially unsafe working conditions in Yale’s shops and labs. But even before the results of those investigations are complete, the University has already taken steps to shore up safety around campus. Supervisors and monitors in all of Yale’s shops, labs and darkrooms have to take emergency response training this week, and at the Dramat, the longstanding tradition of “striking,” or taking down, a set the night after the final show could be a thing of the past.
• A 17 year-old New Haven resident was shot and killed four blocks from Ezra Stiles College on Saturday. After reports of gunshots in the area, New Haven Police Department officers found Vashun Lewis with a gunshot wound to the chest outside of 229 Goffe Street in Dixwell at approximately 12:15 p.m. After he was taken to the hospital, Lewis died of his injuries. NHPD Spokesman Joseph Avery said in a weekend press release that the department has begun to investigate the incident, and is currently pursuing several leads.
