THE NEWS

  • Meet the candidates. We profile the candidates in this year’s Yale College Council elections.
  • Shots were fired near Yale campus this weekend for the fifth time since the beginning of March. An early Saturday morning shooting at the corner of Elm and Howe streets, next to Alpha Delta Pizza and two blocks from Davenport College, sent New Haven Police patrol cars rushing to the scene. Although the Yale Police Department did not send officers to the area after the shooting, YPD Chief Ronnell Higgins sent an e-mail to the Yale Community that morning. It was not long after this, 10 hours in fact, when students received another email from Higgins on Saturday alerting the community to a robbery on Mansfield St. near Starr St. around 12:30 p.m.. Both incidents fit into a pattern of shootings and robberies that has plagued the areas immediately surrounding Yale’s campus for the past month.
  • When Max Webster ’12 left his home in 2005 with only a change of clothes, he had no idea would that he would next see his house on television, collapsed amid the wreckage of Hurricane Katrina. Webster presented his story Saturday at TEDxNashville, where speakers across many fields shared ideas about how to improve society, and explained how his experience led him to found a non-profit organization last fall with other members of his “Ethics and International Affairs” course. Webster’s non-profit, “Climate Voices,” aims to raise awareness about how climate change affects people’s lives, particularly about instances of forced migration because of rising water levels, severe storms and erosion.
