THE NEWS

  • Yale Dining may extend dinner hours in the residential colleges past 7 p.m. next year in response to student demand. After 77 percent of respondents to a Yale Daily News survey last month expressed support for later dinner hours, Yale Dining is exploring ways to extend hours, said Yale Dining Executive Director Rafi Taherian. All other Ivy League schools have later dinner hours, and Director of Residential Dining Regenia Phillips said that Yale’s dining schedule differs from many other colleges and universities.
  • As Yale prepares to open a jointly-run liberal arts college with the National University of Singapore— the first Yale collaboration of its kind — administrators are considering how to preserve the quality of a Yale education overseas. Yale and NUS formalized plans for the Singapore-based college last week, paving the way for administrators to begin hiring faculty and recruiting students.
  • After the Oct. 2 raid on the Morse-Stiles Screw at Elevate, relations between the New Haven Police Department and the Yale Community deteriorated, but a new program seeks to rectify that damage. The NHPD announced the Yale University Police Relations Academy Tuesday in an effort to improve relations between the University and the department, said NHPD Spokesman Joseph Avery. The classes, which will be held at the Police Academy facility on Sherman Parkway, begin on Apr. 12 and run for three consecutive Tuesdays from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.. Avery explicitly said that the course was not created because of the fallout from the Elevate raid. However, NHPD Cpt. Joann Peterson, who will be leading the classes, said the course is a continuation of the department’s post-Elevate efforts to improve its relations with the Yale community.
