THE NEWS

  • During Wednesday night’s hip-hop showcase at Toad’s Place, Fitzroy Ford, 29, was shot in the left leg and Antonio Streater, 20, was shot in the left arm, New Haven Police Department Spokesman Joseph Avery wrote in an e-mail. The police have not made any arrests in the case, Avery told the News, but NHPD Sgt. David Guliuzza said Wednesday night on the scene that detectives are working off a description of a male suspect. Some Yale students said this incident will make them stop going to Toad’s for other events.
  • English Director of Graduate Studies Paul Fryis one of ten recipients of the Kennedy Center/Stephen Sondheim Inspirational Award, a series of annual grants that celebrate the important role of teachers in society. David Pogue ’85, a former student and current New York Times technology columnist, nominated Fry by providing a short narrative about Fry’s influence on his writing.
  • With a $50 million gift to the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences announced Thursday, University administrators say they now have the resources to put ambitious plans for the school into motion.
