In the wake of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami in Japan, and the ensuing nuclear troubles, students and administrators have organized several events on campus over the next few days. From fundraisers with food and music to a candlelight vigil and a guest panel with Japan experts, the Yale community will have a chance to learn more about the situation in Japan and contribute to relief efforts.

Thursday, March 24

6 p.m. Symposium on Analyzing Disaster in Japan (Loria Center, 190 York St.): Five panelists will discuss the implications of the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear crisis on Japan and on the rest of the world. Jonathan Schell, a research fellow at Yale’s Center for the Study of Globalization, and Shun-ichiro Karato, a Yale professor of geology and geophysics, will join Yoji Koda and Kotaro Tamura, research fellows at Harvard University, and Yasuhiro Matsuda, a visiting professor from the University of Tokyo. Donations will be accepted.

8:30 p.m. Candlelight Vigil (Cross Campus): A candlelight vigil organized by the Master’s Office to commemorate victims of the Japanese earthquake and their families will follow the symposium.

9 p.m. Hope for Japan fundraiser (Berkeley dining hall): Hosted by the Japanese American Students’ Union (JASU), Yale’s only Japanese student group, this fundraiser will feature performances by campus groups, food from local restaurants, and raffling off of gift certificates for New Haven businesses. Performances will include a capella group Mixed Company and the Yale Gospel Choir, in addition to a student-led group of whistlers and violinist Kisho Watanabe ’11. Donations of at least $5 are requested at the door, and t-shirts will be on sale for $10. All proceeds will go to the Red Cross for Japan relief.

Friday, March 25

7 p.m. Jump Start Japan show (Jonathan Edwards theater): This event will feature a variety of student talents, from a capella to improv. Tickets are $5, and all proceeds will go to the Red Cross.

Saturday, March 26

8 p.m. Bach Collegium Japan benefit concert (Woolsey Hall): The Yale Institute of Sacred Music will present the Bach Collegium Japan, an orchestra and chorus specializing in Baroque music, in a concert to raise money for Japan relief. Tickets are $8 for students and $15 for the general public, and all proceeds will be donated to the Red Cross. Donations will be accepted at the concert as well.
