THE NEWS

  • More than 5 months after the SWAT raid on the Morse-Stiles Screw at the Elevate nightclub, the New Haven Police Department released the findings of its Internal Affairs investigation Thursday. City Hall Chief Administrative Officer Robert Smuts ’01 released the report on the Oct. 2 raid to the public after reviewing the investigation and making recommendations to the Board of Police Commissioners. Among his recommendations, Smuts wrote that the NHPD should work to better plan its inspections and that the department should develop polices and training material regarding citizen cell phone usage during police actions.
  • The ability to publish competitive research often depends on the speed at which computers process data, but Yale’s technology system does not make the list of the top 500 fastest supercomputers worldwide. The list comes out twice a year and university’s such as Harvard, Stanford, Columbia, the University of Texas and the University of Indiana have all made the list within the last three years. Computers that can run data faster increase a researcher’s chances of publishing a finding first, said Chuck Powell, associate chief information officer of Information Technology Services, adding that universities’ rankings in computing fluctuate frequently.
  • As spring break begins this weekend, many students will depart for home or exotic locales — but several will settle into their dorms to spend the two-week break on campus. From finishing senior projects to exploring the Elm City and saving money on travel, ten students interviewed cited diverse reasons for their stay. But they all agreed on one thing: the campus is about to quiet down.
