THE NEWS

  • As Mandi Schwartz’s ’11 battle with leukemia continues to inspire supporters across the country, the spotlight has also fallen on one of her teammates. Fellow women’s hockey forward Aleca Hughes ’12, a leader in raising awareness for Mandi’s cause, has been named a finalist for the 2011 Hockey Humanitarian Award — an accolade granted each year to one Division I or Division III player. Hughes and her teammates have rallied around Schwartz since her diagnosis in December 2008, organizing fundraisers and bone marrow drives. But efforts that have benefited cancer patients nationwide have remained unable to cure Mandi’s disease.
  • After lying vacant for more than a year, 260 York St. has a new tenant.

A new salon offering hair care and waxing will open in the space March 1, barring any delays, co-owner Jennifer Patton said. Tucked between J.Press and Davenport College, Salon J will seek to woo the student population with a “modern vintage” look and Yale discounts, she said, and will offer haircuts, perms, highlights and hair extensions, as well as waxing services. Other hair salon and barbershop owners have expressed mixed opinions about the opening of another salon.

  • When the newly-hired curator of American paintingsand sculpture took her first tour of Yale’s art storage facility 31 years ago, she found a set of damaged canvases wrapped up and rolled around two-by-four blocks of wood. She realized that the paintings, which had been there for 50 years, were some of the only surviving works from the first years of the late 19th-century American muralist movement. The murals, taken from the Huntington mansion in New York, are among Yale’s many art holdings that will finally get their day in the sun when the Art Gallery reopens in late 2012.
