OPINION | Lu: The immediate difference a YDN op-ed makes.

Dinosaur institution? Who says? The day after the release of the News op-ed, “For the Love of Bass,” the Bass Library security guards made just one closing-time announcement, at 1:30 a.m. The transcript, verbatim: “I am 42. I am single. I have no kids–though the rest of the announcement has to stay the same. Bass Library is closing in 15 minutes. The fire marshal yadda yadda yadda.” End transmission. At 1:40 a.m., the lights flickered, but only once, and for a split second. The guards made their rounds through every study room, but there was no sound except for the soft beeping of unlocked doors. And when I left, at 1:43 a.m., the guard who was checking bags said to me, “I get paid by the hour. I don’t care if you stay until 3 a.m. Oh, and the fire marshal? He’s real. We get fire marshal number 9. He checks to make sure everything is ok. And we kick you out at 1:45 so we can shut down on the hour.” Thorough. Professional. Legit.
