THE NEWS

  • In his 18th State of the City address Monday night, Mayor John DeStefano Jr. sounded a tough call to change the way the city does business. In front of a packed Board of Aldermen chamber at City Hall, DeStefano outlined his strategies for bringing the city’s fiscal house into order. Most importantly, DeStefano said, the city must tighten employee benefits and pensions packages, cut some services and make others more efficient, lay off city workers, and get more flexibility from the state to collect revenue.
  • Every day for almost three years, former Assistant Chief Ronnell Higgins pinned one star to each lapel of his navy blue Yale Police Department uniform.On Monday, he pinned on three.

    Chief Higgins, officially sworn in last Friday, arrived at his office by 8:30 a.m. yesterday, ready for his regular meetings to begin.

  • A new group of faculty and staff spouses and partners could help recruit professors to Yale. Several of the group’s members approached Deputy Provost for Faculty Development Frances Rosenbluth last fall about putting together a support network for faculty spouses, who sometimes feel distant from the Yale community.
