THE NEWS

  • On Saturday January 22 family, friends and admirers of Sargent Shriver ’38 LAW ’41 congregated in the sanctuary of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church to honor the life of the man who founded the Peace Corps, ran for Vice President in 1972 and started the Special Olympics. Though the attendees recognized Shriver’s outstanding dedication to public service, they also reminisced about a deeply spiritual man who loved his family with abandon. Shriver’s commemorators shed tears, but, as Shriver’s son Mark remarked, they were tears of joy, not sadness.
  • Getting admitted to the Graduate School may be a bit tougher this year.

The Graduate School received three percent more applications, but it will admit about same number of students as last year, when the size of the incoming class of Ph.D students dropped by about 16 percent because of the decline in University endowment, Graduate School Dean Thomas Pollard said.

  • The Elm City Market,a food co-op expected to open on the ground floor of 360 State in March, will not open until early summer.
