Cross Campus: 1.21.11

Last time around. Course schedules are due at 5 p.m. today for members of the Class of 2011. Don’t get too sentimental.

Former Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker is leaving his position as head of President’s Economic Recovery Advisory Board, Reuters reported Thursday night. University President Richard Levin was under consideration to replace him.

But Levin will not be getting that job. The Wall Street Journal reported that there will be a new board, the President’s Council on Jobs and Competitiveness, replacing PERAB, and Chief Executive Officer of General Electric Jeffrey Immelt will lead it.

An electrical fire broke out on the roof of the Laboratory of Epidemiology and Public Health at 60 College St. around 1 p.m. Thursday, according to the Office of Public Affairs and Communications. The fire started in a vent, and the building had to be evacuated for two hours.

Ready for some confrontation? The Yale College Council is sponsoring a free trip for students to a taping of the “The Jerry Springer Show” in Stamford, Conn. as a part of its new Eli Adventures program. Students must submit their names online by 5 p.m. Saturday if they want to enter the ticket lottery.

Sharing the magic. Danielle Tumminio ’03 DIV ’06 — who wrote the book “God and Harry Potter at Yale: Teaching Faith and Fantasy in an Ivy League Classroom” and taught the Yale residential college seminar “Christian Theology and Harry Potter” — is now teaching the same course at Tufts University.

Ezra Stiles College students held a party Thursday night to celebrate the first birthday of Aqua, Ezra Stiles College Master Stephen Pitti’s labrador retriever. The party, held in the Swing Space basement, featured “real cake — for people,” Pitti said in a Wednesday e-mail to Stiles students.

Heating up. U.S. Rep. Chris Murphy is running for Joseph Lieberman’s ’64 LAW ’67 U.S. Senate seat in 2012, jumping into a Democratic field that’s already getting crowded. According to the political blog Daily Ructions, Francisco “Frank” Borges will also join former Secretary of State Susan Bysiewicz ’83 in the race.
