THE NEWS

  • Last semester, retired four-star Gen. Stanley McChrystal taught a weekly seminar at Yale about leadership. Reporter Emily Foxhall spent time with the group, looking into the general’s new role as Yale professor.
  • Banco Santander, one of the largest banks in Europe,will fund three globally-focused University initiatives under a new agreement finalized last week.

    Executives from the bank met with University administrators in Woodbridge Hall Friday to sign the deal, which will fund the conservation of a painting Yale has attributed to famed Spanish artist Diego Velázquez, the Yale World Fellows program and study abroad scholarships for students of European and Arabic languages and for those who travel to Spanish-speaking countries.

  • Yale Law School Professor Amy Chua published a controversial article Jan. 8 titled “Why Chinese Parents Are Superior” in the Wall Street Journal. The article — excerpted from her book, “Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother” — garnered thousands of comments online and inspired dozens of articles in reponse to Chua’s take on parenting. In an interview with the News, Chua discusses how her article has been misunderstood, why she reformed her views on parenting and her daughter’s recent slumber party.
