Former vice-presidential nominee, Peace Corps Director, and Yale Daily News Chairman Sargent Shriver ’38 LAW ’41 was hospitalized at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda Md., on Sunday night. The 95-year-old is currently in critical condition, according to a statement by the Associated Press.

Shriver was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2003, but the nature of the 95-year-old’s current hospitalization has not been released.

In the 1972 presidential election, Shriver ran on the Democratic ticket alongside presidential candidate George McGovern. His wife, the late Eunice Kennedy Shriver, was the sister of President John F. Kennedy. During Kennedy’s tenure, Shriver served as the first director of the Peace Corps.

Additionally, Shriver and his wife were the founders of the Special Olympics program. Under President Lyndon Johnson, Shriver led the “War on Poverty,” creating programs such as Head Start and Legal Services.

During his time at Yale, Shriver served as the chairman of the Yale Daily News.
