Wednesday’s Buzz: 12.08.10

THE NEWS

  • The Palmer House’s new owners, Chabad at Yale, launched a five-year, $6 million capital campaign to furnish and renovate the house last week. Chabad leaders said they will carry the name “the Chabad House” from their current property at 37 Edgewood Ave. to the new building.
  • The market for used books is going to get much fiercer next semester. The Yale College Council, the Yale Hunger and Homelessness Action Project and five other campus organizations are starting a textbook recycling program to benefit New Haven homeless shelters. The textbook exchange, officially known as the YCC-YHHAP Book Exchange, will also sell significantly discounted course packets and trade books.
  • Downtown Crossing, the project that city leaders hope will tie downtown to the city’s southern neighborhoods, received the Board of Aldermen’s approval Monday night. The project will replace the Oak Street Connector portion of Route 34 with two urban boulevards connecting to Ella T. Grasso Boulevard. City administrators hope the project, which will cost the city $5 million, will provide an opportunity to continue a biotechnology boom in the Medical School district and a source of additional tax revenue. At the Board of Aldermen meeting Monday night, 24 aldermen voted to approve the project and one voted against approval.
