THE NEWS

  • Since the 1980s, Yale and New Haven AIDS activists have been integral in improving conditions, treatments and perceptions of HIV/AIDS in New Haven, through long-term efforts for research and advocacy. Though activism seemed to drop off when national access to treatment became easier at the end of the 1990s, the movement has seen a renaissance in recent years.
  • As financial institutions nationwide try to right themselves in the wake of the credit crisis, two local banks are grappling for the hearts, minds, and wallets of New Haven residents. In contrast to a national trend of increasing fees, New Haven-based NewAlliance Bank offers no-fee checking accounts, which it has begun to promote via a vigorous media blitz. Meanwhile, NewAlliance, whose headquarters are located next door to Webster’s New Haven branch, has seized the opportunity to promote its checking accounts’ relative lack of fees. However, the differences between NewAlliance and Webster are not so simple as both banks have raised and lowered different fees in competition for local business.
  • Linebacker Jordan Haynes ’12 had barely given Ivy League footballa thought as he looked at colleges four years ago. Then he received a text from then-Yale defensive backs coach Tony Reno and soon was cancelling all his planned official visits to commit to Yale. Three seasons later, Haynes’ teammates have voted him the next captain of the Bulldogs.
