Monday’s Buzz: 11.29.10

THE NEWS

  • Three weeks ago, Mayor John DeStefano, Jr. unveiled his New Haven Promise, a Yale-funded program that hopes to launch a new era for the city by vastly increasing access to college education for the city’s public school students. But the project has been years in the making, and according to some students, Yale undergraduates in the Roosevelt Institution, a campus activist group that researches policy issues, played a significant role in the program’s conception and development.
  • Mory’s Council President Christopher Getman ’64 said the institution will not be able to stay afloat unless its membership broadens. Economic problems aside, Getman said the restaurant’s management truly believes that Mory’s should be open to the entire Yale community, and that every student and alumnus of the University shares a connection to the club and the history it represents.
  • As more researchers move to the site, the West Campus administration is instituting a series of changes to make them feel more comfortable in their offices and laboratories seven miles from central campus. While some employees said the changes, which include more frequent transportation and regular dining services, make them feel less isolated and allow them to more easily connect with one another, others said the campus’ location is still a drawback for potential researchers and visitors.
