Tuesday’s Buzz: 11.16.10

THE NEWS

  • A recent study by Kaplan found that 81 percent of the 108 graduate programs surveyed have not developed a policy for comparing scores from the current Graduate Record Exam and the new GRE that will be implemented next August, or how to evaluate scores from the new test. Associate Dean of the Graduate School Pamela Schirmeister said that next year, when students will have a choice between the new and old versions of the exam, it could be safer for students to take the GRE before it changes.
  • Unlike some of its peer institutions, Yale College saw almost no change in the number of early applications it received this year compared to last fall.
  • Two landscape management courses in the School of Forestry and Environmental Studies are developing plans this semester to make West Campus— Yale’s burgeoning site in West Haven for science research and the arts — more integrated with the natural lands surrounding it. The grounds have changed relatively little since the pharmaceutical company Bayer HealthCare sold the campus to Yale in 2007 but students are aiming to make the campus more functional and integrated with the natural environment around it, professors of the classes, Alexander Felson and Mark Ashton, said.
