The Elm City saw its 21st homicide of the year Friday.

At approximately 7:30 Friday evening, NHPD Officers were alerted to gunshots coming from within the L & A Mini Mart, according to a release issued by New Haven Police Department spokesman Joe Avery. Upon arriving on the scene — located at 351 Whalley Avenue, eight blocks from campus — officers discovered New Haven resident Marquis Norfleet, 20, lying on the floor with a gunshot wound in his chest.

Although Norfleet was taken to the Hospital of Saint Raphael’s for treatment, he died from his injuries shortly thereafter, Avery wrote. As of Saturday morning, police were still investigating the incident.

In 2009 13 homicides occurred in New Haven.
