No Yale player had ever returned two kickoffs for touchdowns in a game. No Ivy League player had either.

In fact, no Yale player had ever returned two kickoffs for touchdowns in an entire career.

Then Chris Smith redefined Bulldog special teams success with 83- and 79-yard touchdown returns just 2:23 apart that led Yale to victory against Brown Saturday.

On Monday, his unique feat was recognized with two major awards. Smith was named Sports Network / Fathead.com FCS National Special Teams Player of the Week as well as Ivy League Special Teams Player of the Week.

If Smith keeps running at the pace he has maintained thus far in his young career, those will not be the last of his awards. Although a hip injury truncated his freshman season, Smith has already amassed the sixth most kick return yards in Yale history. The sophomore’s 573 return yards in this year’s campaign already a Yale single-season record.

Smith might have been recognized this week for his performance on returns, but his was far from a one-dimensional game. The wide receiver also led the Bulldogs with six catches for 45 yards, and now leads the team with 35 receptions this season.
