In today’s issue of the Crimson, a columnist called for an end to Harvard-Yale t-shirts bearing slogans or designs that are demeaning to women. The column pointed out that past shirts have used words such as “bitches” to insult Yale, and suggested that Harvard and Yale stick to their values even in the face of joking rivalry.

All of the work and media we produce should be reflective of the respect we feel for other students on this campus. We should live by this principle every day and should not compromise it during the frenzy of Harvard-Yale weekend.

The columnist cites the Yale Freshman Class Council’s decision to change their shirt design in 2009, which was deemed offensive to members of the LGBT community because of its use of the word “sissies.” The original shirt featured the F. Scott Fitzgerald quote “I think of all Harvard men as sissies.”
