The 40th anniversary of Garry Trudeau’s ’70 ART ’73 famed “Doonesbury” comic strip is upon us. We still run “Doonesbury,” which started as “Bull Tales” on the pages of the News.

Although Trudeau is going to be on campus next week his name has been popping up in our Google News search today so we thought we’d collect some choice bits from tributes:

• Slate has devoted a lot of coverage to “Doonesbury” and has compiled a list of the strip’s 200 greatest moments.
• Slate’s David Plotz also conducted an e-mail interview with Trudeau who told him: ” Comics are like a public utility: We’re up 365 days a year, and you do have to be built for it.”
• NPR also has an interview with Trudeau who says the strip in its infancy “was basically a sports strip.”

Currently the Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library is exhibiting “Doonesbury in a Time of War.” The Yale University Press is publishing “Doonesbury and the Art of G.B. Trudeau” by Brian Walker and Trudeau himself has “40: A Doonesbury Retrospective” coming out.
