Wednesday’s Buzz: 10.20.10

THE NEWS

  • The Sexual Misconduct Committeereleased a report on Monday that could redefine the way Yale handles cases of sexual misconduct and create a more centralized and streamlined system. The report, which comes almost exactly one year after the Women Faculty Forum issued a 76-page report on sexual misconduct, advocates the creation of a University-wide committee to address complaints of sexual grievances and introduces the phrase “sexual misconduct” as an umbrella term encompassing rape, sexual assault and sexual harrassment. Now, with the recommendations submitted to Provost Peter Salovey, a new committee is lined up and will soon begin reviewing the report to decide how to implement the changes.
  • Sorting through fencing coach Henry Harutunian’s desk would be the dream of any budding archaeologist. A collection of 25 foils, the swords piled high, are almost historic artifacts — a testament to years and years of turning scared, callow freshman into tough, lean fencers. Harutunian’s ties to Yale stretch decades back and 160 members of the Yale Fencing community gathered in the Lanman Center on October 9 to pay tribute to Harutunian’s four decades of “getting the job done.”
  • Climb every mountain. Payne Whitney Gym is now offering an “Introduction to Rock Climbing” class to Yale students and faculty at the Connecticut Rock Climbing Gym, located at 91 Shelton Avenue. A Yale Shuttle will transport participants from Payne Whitney to the class, which is designed to teach participants the essential skills of the sport.
