Two cars in crash on Chapel and Park

A New Haven Fire Department Emergency Medical Services truck almost crashed into a white Dodge Caravan driving at the intersection of Chapel and Park streets at about 11 p.m. Wednesday, an eyewitness said. To avoid the collision, both vehicles swerved in different directions; the truck crashed into a tree, while the white car collided with a street pole.

Ahmed Assef, 36, night manager for the neighboring pizza parlor Est Est Est, said it was unclear which vehicle caused the accident. Pedestrians and businessowners watched as a gurney took an injured victim from the white Dodge into an ambulance.

This is, and has always been, an extremely dangerous intersection that kills the vitality of this part of Downtown.

MAJOR traffic calming and a complete redesign of the intersection, to bring it to European street design standards like those in the New Haven Complete Streets Manual, are desperately needed before pedestrians are killed.
