Local businesses help save July 4 fireworks

Sparks will, indeed, fly in New Haven this Fourth of July.

Even though the Elm City’s July 4 fireworks were cut from the the fiscal year 2010-’11 budget, the city will have fireworks after all, the New Haven Register is reporting, though there will be a change of location to help cut costs.

Ikea and other Long Wharf businesses are pitching in for the festivities, and Keys to the City at Terminal 110 will hold a fundraiser June 18, according to the Register. Ikea, the lead sponsor, is making a $20,000 contribution, the Register reported.

Instead of taking place at Long Wharf, the fireworks will come from the top of East Rock; the move is a cost-saving one since “the Long Wharf location is more cumbersome and affects highway traffic,” the Register said.

According to the Register, the fireworks are scheduled to start at 9:15 p.m on July 4. If it rains, the they will be held the following day.
