Dr. Catherine Everett SOM ’10 missed seeing her daughter Charlotte Goins ’10 graduate for just one reason: She was getting her own diploma.

Everett graduated from the Yale School of Management’s MBA for Executives: Leadership in Healthcare program on Monday as Goins simultaneously had her own commencement ceremony. A radiologist and managing partner of the North Carolina-based Coastal Radiology Associates, Everett said she sought an MBA degree to keep her private practice competitive in the increasingly business-oriented world of medicine.

Everett said she first heard about the MBA for Executives program because her daughter was at Yale. After enrolling in the program, Everett flew to New Haven every other weekend from her hometown of New Bern, N.C., to attend classes. Goins, a member of Davenport College and the goalkeeper on the field hockey team, graduated Monday with a degree in American Studies.

“It has been fun getting to know New Haven and meeting Charlotte’s friends,” Everett said. “I’ve also gotten to see her play field hockey, and that has been great.”

As for the pair’s post-graduation plans, Everett will continue her radiology practice and hopes to become involved on the national stage of radiology through the American College of Radiology. Goins, who focused her American Studies major on American film, is aiming to pursue screen-writing aspirations after leaving Yale.
