Sterling Professor of the Humanities and renowned literary scholar Harold Bloom is scheduled to return to Yale next year to teach once again — but only tentatively.

In an e-mail to junior and senior English majors, English Department Registrar Ruben Roman shared a schedule of seminars to offered in the 2010-’11 school year. Bloom’s fall seminars, “Shakespeare and the Canon: Comedies and Poems” and “Art of Reading a Poem” are listed, as are the spring seminars “Shakespeare and the Canon: Tragedies and Romances” and “Four 20th Century Poets: W.B.Yeats, Wallace Stevens, D.H. Lawrence, Hart Crane.” However, question marks appear next to all four course listings, suggesting that the offerings are tentative.

English Department Chair Michael Warner said he did not have any additional information about Bloom’s teaching plans beyond what was included in Roman’s e-mail.

“We’re hoping for the best,” Warner said in an e-mail Tuesday.

Bloom, 79, canceled his scheduled courses this spring after falling ill in December and was hospitalized for more than a month. Bloom also canceled his courses after becoming ill in fall of 2007 and again in the spring of 2008, when he was hospitalized after a fall.
