Dartmouth to lay off 76 employees

As Yale staff members wait to find out whether they will keep their jobs this year amid the University’s latest layoffs, Dartmouth is eliminating about 76 jobs starting tomorrow.

With a $100 million budget deficit to make up in the next two years, Dartmouth will lay off 38 people tomorrow and the rest in April, Dartmouth administrators announced today, according to a Bloomberg report.

Meanwhile, 33 employees will have their hours reduced. About 60 percent of the staff laid off are salaried workers, and the rest work on an hourly basis, Dartmouth president Jim Yong Kim told Bloomberg.

Dartmouth’s endowment fell 23 percent to $2.82 billion last year, causing the school to lay off 72 employees in 2009, with 100 more taking buyout packages this year.
