Ward 1 Alderman Mike Jones ’11 took to his blog Wednesday to voice his concerns with an ordinance circulating through City Hall that would bar minors from entering clubs.

Jones wrote that while he understands the issues at stake — including the “chaotic scene” that can occur when clubs host parties for people under the age of 18 — he would not support the ordinance as written, which would ban anyone under the age of 21 from clubs serving liquor.

“I don’t think however, that barring college students from clubs does anything constructive to fix the situation,” he wrote. “To my knowledge, clubs are not complaining about 18-21 year olds inside their establishments, and there are already — and will continue to be — thousands of us on the streets every night and particularly on the weekends.”

Jones suggested that he would support an altered ordinance requiring clubs to close at an earlier time or hire extra security if they grant entrance to minors. He urged readers to come to the public hearing to be held at a meeting of the Board of Aldermen’s Public Safety Committee.
