Evangelist calls Yale “modern Sodom and Gomorrah”

Yale’s campus served as the involuntary host to 25-year-old evangelist Jesse Morrell, who spent Tuesday and Wednesday sermonizing to pedestrians about the “evils of sin” on Old Campus, Cross Campus and the section of Wall St. near Woodbridge Hall.

Morrell is head of the Open Air Outreach, a Christian ministry that focuses on reaching young people in the United States and Canada. The mission of the ministry, its Web site said, is to “reach the lost with the gospel of Christ Jesus through open-air preaching on streets and college campuses and to train other Christians to do the same.”

According to a Nov. 29 article from the Record-Journal, the New Haven Police Department has threatened Morrell with arrest several times because he was violating noise ordinances. Last August, he won $25,000 in damages from the NHPD for unnecessary interference in his sidewalk sermons, the New Haven Register reported.

Tuesday morning, Morrell shouted at passing students and demanded to know if they were homosexuals. He went on to call President Barack Obama immoral and corrupt. Wednesday afternoon, Morrell referred to the University as a “modern Sodom and Gomorrah,” calling pedestrians sinners and banging his hands against a Bible.

“What I don’t understand is why anyone would open brothels in New Haven,” Morrell asked, “when all the sorority girls are giving it away for free?”

Police appeared on the scene at about 1:00 p.m. and put an end to Morrell’s zealous rant.

When will he realize that the only way to show Christ to other people is to show them His love, His mercy, and His grace as well as our need for His forgiveness? Morrell sounds more like a pharisee- trying to point out people’s sins by shouting at them from the rooftops. We are all sinners and we do all need His grace- but that includes Morrell and others like him. If God is calling someone, He will do so in HIs own time with a quiet voice, not with the deterring, berating “sermonizing” of someone who is not actually in conversation with his supposed audience. What Morrell says must be taken in context of God’s grace and our hope for salvation; this context is not given from random shout-outs. True, he believes he has the truth and that he should be sharing this truth with others, but is he doing so out of love or out of a sense of obligation. I would assume the latter, as he does not seem to be sharing God’s love through a personal relationship with the audience, but rather spewing out words. How does that show them that God loves them so much He was willing to die for them so that one day they might join Him? Or that God cares about them and has a purpose for them, so that they may walk according to that purpose? It doesn’t. He sounds scary, judgmental, and hypocritical- all things attributed to Christianity because of this sort of behavior from particular self-proclaimed Christians (i don’t know if he is or not. not for me to judge). It would be silly, but likely, for his “sermons” to have deterred people from seeing the truth: the mercy of Christ.

The new website is http://www.OpenAirOutreach.com and the Police did not put an end to my preaching. They showed up twice and both times left, allowing me the freedom to preach. I made some signs and am coming back tomorrow.

Central Connecticut State University made this video report of our ministry on their campus:

I thought this was a pretty good article done in the Yale Herald:

For the record, the $25,000 was not in damages, it was in attorney fees for the Alliance Defense Fund. I only received $1 in nominal damages in the New Haven case. We also just settled our Hartford case and again I got $1 nominal damages, and my attorney’s got $20,000 in fees.

This man does not understand Christianity, nor the Gospel.

If someone wants to learn about what Christianity REALLY is (hint: it’s love), talk to a reputable priest or pastor. Disregard Mr. Morrell. I fear (though I could be wrong) he is just a lonely, attention-seeker in need of some guidance.

  • Prespilot68

To Sad Face: Hmmmmm…..I guess what John the Baptist problem was he wasn’t a “Reputable priest of pastor”…..Let us remember Jesus and John the Baptist both started their ministries by going out in public and preaching “REPENT for the KINGDOM OF GOD IS NEAR”. Sounds like Mr. Morrell is in pretty good company.

@ Christian: The Gospel is NOT ONLY about grace and mercy and forgiveness. It is also about surrendering your rights to God, repenting and living a changed life.

Personal relationships and one-on-one conversations are only one way to share the Gospel.

Love is not a feeling. Expressions of love are not always warm or feel good at the time.

Biblically speaking it says in Colossians AND Ephesians that what truly alienates people from God is their OWN wicked actions.

Be wary that you do not put God in a box. He does not limit Himself to only winning people through soft calls. Sometimes He needs to WAKE PEOPLE UP! God doesn’t want people to hit rock bottom first before they finally look up. Today is the day of salvation, the scriptures say.

Scriptures say that He ordained the foolishness of preaching to confound the wise.

Just because people get angry or a preacher sounds angry does not mean it’s wrong.

I’m afraid I have to agree with #8.

When people say “if you want to know what Christianity REALLY is…” they mean “if you want to know the version of Christianity I like…” Everybody then has pet Bible passages to point to in support of their brand, conveniently ignoring other parts.

“Christianity’s all about LOVE, man…” Well, sure it’s nice that you’ve structured your worldview around generosity and love (and the world would be a better place if everyone did), but you’re deluded if you think that there’s no other way the Bible can be interpreted.

This man is nuttier than the guy I saw on the New Haven green today shouting obscenities into a trash can. Probably less productive too.

“When will he realize that the only way to show Christ to other people is to show them His love, His mercy, and His grace as well as our need for His forgiveness?”
I did not mean to say that Christianity is a free license to do-whatever-you-please-cuz-God-loves-you, I meant to point out our need for forgiveness as well. But the point is, if we turn ourselves over to HIm completely, we ARE forgiven. And isn’t it a JOY?! What freedom. What peace. What mercy. I do not believe this point is getting across when people listen to Morrell in cross campus.
Instead, I believe they hear, “Repent; you are sinners.” Not, “Repent; we are broken, but Jesus made the sacrifice to make us whole. We are sinners, but Christ’s blood will purify our sins. We are burdened, but He will carry our load.” John the Baptist, if you remember, cried out against the hypocrisy of the pharisees. Christ is all about LOVE; that does not make our sin any less. It only makes our hope a possibility.

PS- I just want to say that everything I write is my understanding at this point in my relationship with Christ. I don’t claim to be an expert on the Scriptures; I haven’t had any theological training. I hope that as my relationship with Christ continues, my understanding of His word will deepen. So take everything I wrote with a grain of salt- the only truly reliable word on these (and all) matters is His Word, the Bible.

I think the we’re not realizing that debating the finer points of the superstitious nonsense that is christianity is worse than useless.

This man deserved all the heckling he got, it’s what he expected and wanted. It doesn’t matter that his brand of christianity differs from yours. It’s all ridiculous and should be expected to be ridiculed when aired so publicly.

  • @14

I in no way of approve of what this many was saying, BUT

@#14 – Augustine’s Confessions: Read it. If for nothing else than it’s literary value.

Police put an end to his zealous rage? I hope they cited some legitimate law because this young man has every right to express his opinion. Why not remove Rush, or Sarah or the entire Republican Senate for their zealous rages? This young man has freedom of speech and freedom of religion just like the rest of us, unless I’m missing something here. Both of these Constitutional guarantees are cherished American rights. Did they move him because he did not have a preaching license or a parade permit? I’d sure like to know.

Your newspaper is too narrow minded and too anti-Christian, like the rest of the American educational system has become.

Wake Up and do a better job when it comes to reporting about elements of religion and faith!

Jesse Morrell is a heretic by all orthodox standards of Christianity. As an open-theist he denies God’s comprehensive knowledge of the future, he denies God’s sovereignty, and makes God out to be a confused child and man out to be the ultimate authority. He promotes works-righteousness (good deeds make you right with God and maintain that rightness.) Jesus Christ plus anything is a worthless, vain pursuit in philosophy.

This man thrives on heckling because he has carefully crafted his own reality; where if he acts foolishly and brashly he can claim this as persecution for the cause of Christ. To quote Keith Green, “It [the Bible] doesn’t say blessed are you when you are obnoxious for the Lord.” If you guys at Yale want him to leave you should ignore him, any attention keeps him around. I do believe open-air preaching is a valid means of communicating the Gospel (or any other idea to be publicly engaged,) but the way Mr.Morrell carries himself is arrogant and foolish.

For an orthodox presentation of what Mr.Morrell claims to be preaching (the Gospel of Jesus Christ) see: http://illbehonest.com/biblical-gospel

I do urge you all to repent and believe the Gospel, but not from the authority of Jesse’s god, but from the God of the Bible, who will judge all men according to His law. If you want to hear a Christian who actually knows what he is talking about; invite James White on campus (aomin.org) He has debated Dan Barker on multiple occasions. I am certain he would welcome an invitation.

    In Christ, Cody
