10/6/07: Yale vs. Dartmouth

3:42 p.m. Ivy League Wrap-Up: Holy Cross is holding onto a 41-37 lead against Brown while Harvard looks to move to 2-0 in the Ivies with a 25-15 lead against Cornell late in the fourth quarter. With little over 14 minutes left in the game, Penn is on pace to record their first victory of the season with a 42-6 lead against Georgetown.

3:39 p.m. Yale-Dartmouth 50-10: En route to a decisive 50-10 victory, the Bulldog defense held the Big Green without a single touchdown as the offense picked up over 380 total yards. The Elis head into next week’s game against LeHigh with a 4-0 record and look to start 5-0 for the first time since 1981. The Bulldogs haven’t lost since the heartbreaker against Princeton on November 11, 2006.

3:32 p.m. Everyone in on the action: And we thought Cornell was a blowout. With a 40-point lead, the Bulldogs are on pace to average a 39.5 margin of victory in conference play. Although no Eli has picked up more than one touchdown, the Bulldogs have posted the most points against the Big Green since 1967.

3:29 p.m. Half Century: After a Dartmouth fumble on the kickoff, Yale has a chance to record over 50 points for the second straight Ivy League game. Thanks to a sturdy Bulldog defense, Mike McLeod has picked up more yards than the entire Dartmouh offense despite only playing three quarters.

3:26 p.m. Number Two: Sophomore running back Jordan Farrell recorded his second career touchdown, putting the Bulldogs up 43-10 with less than five minutes to play in the final period.

3:19 p.m. All wrapped up: With the game pretty much in the books, McLeod spent most of the fourth quarter on the sideline as sophomore running back Ricky Galvez has done an impressive job burning the clock for the Bulldogs.

3:12 p.m. Around the Ivy League, Part Two: Harvard is maintaining a 19-15 league against Cornell, Penn is shutting down Georgetown 35-0, Brown is down 34-20 against Holy Cross, and Yale is up 36-10 after a blocked punt was returned for a touchdown by Dartmouth.

3:04 p.m. Bus Driver: Despite only recording 78 yards through the air, Polhemus has a 120.37 passing efficiency rating on the day. Thanks to the senior quarterback’s effective game management, the Elis have picked up over 300 total yards and are entering the fourth quarter up 36-3 against the hapless Big Green.

2:55 p.m. Unsung Hero: After opening holes for stud tailback McLeod on nearly every play, senior fullback Joe Fuccillo record his first touchdown of the season after McLeod pushed the ball to the 2-yard line. The Bulldogs are up 36-3 with 4:01 left in the 3rd quarter and have already picked up over 220 yards on the ground.

2:45 p.m. On the Ground: On a big third down, Polhemus demonstrated his athleticism by scrambling for a nine-yard gain. Although McLeod has been the star of the game with 123 yards on 22 carries, Polhemus has added 43 yards on the ground and a touchdown, proving his dual-threat capability.

2:36 p.m. More McLeod: McLeod picks up his first first touchdown of the day with 12:02 left in the 3rd quarter. After a mediocre first half by the superstar tailback’s standards, McLeod has already record 120 yards on 20 carries and has pushed his average to 6 yards per carry. The Bulldogs have punished the Big Green for 167 yards on the ground on the day.

2:32 p.m. Things aren’t getting any better: After an intentional grounding call on Big Green quarterback Tom Bennewitz, the Yale offense starts off on their own 43-yard line with a little over 14 minutes left in the first half.

2:07 p.m. Cutting it Close: Polhemus stepped out of bounds after a two-yard scramble with only a second left, setting up a 27-yard field goal for senior Alan Kimball. The Bulldogs head into the locker room up 22-3. Despite a lackluster first half, Mike McLeod still managed to record 80 yards on just 17 carries.

2:02 p.m. McLeod, McLeod, McLeod: With less than a minute left in the first half, the Bulldogs have kept pounding the ball with Mike McLeod. The Elis are on the Big Green 35-yard line with only 26 seconds left in the second quarter. If the Bulldogs manage to put points on the board on this drive, they will put this game out of reach.

1:56 p.m. Big Green on the Board: On fourth and three, Dartmouth converted a 20-yard field goal attempt for their first points of the day. Yale leads 19-3.

1:56 p.m. Dartmouth threatening: With less than two minutes left in the first half, the Big Green are on the Yale three-yard line. The Parents’ Weekend crowd is really getting into it.

1:50 p.m. Punting: Although special teams isn’t the most glamorous part of the game, the Bulldogs have had incredible field position due to the incredible leg of sophomore punter Tom Mante. Mante has averaged nearly 46 yards per punt and managed to pin the Big Green inside their 13-yard line late in the first half.

1:44 p.m. Another hold: Langston Johnson records his second hold on the drive, negating a huge run by Mike McLeod. The Bulldogs are trying to extend a 19-0 lead with under seven minutes left in the first half.

1:38 p.m. Where is McLeod? With only 25 yards on 11 carries, McLeod is a far cry from the 198 yards and two touchdowns that he recorded against the Big Green last year. In fact, Polhemus has outgained McLeod by 13 yards on the ground.

1:34 p.m. Bulldog turnover: After a successful screen to John Sheffield, Dartmouth recovered a Yale fumble and advanced the ball to the Bulldog 40-yard line. The Big Green will have to capitalize on this opportunity if they want to make this game competitive.

1:31 p.m. Around the Ivy League: Harvard is beating Cornell 6-0, Brown is struggling against Holy Cross 24-10, and Penn is up 14-0 against Georgetown. After another third and out by the Big Green with 11:04 left in the second quarter, Yale seems to have this game already wrapped up.

1:21 p.m. End of first quarter: At the end of the first period, the Elis have totaled 100 total yards compared to the Big Green’s -10. In addition, the Bulldogs have had possession for 9:27, thoroughly dominating Dartmouth on both sides of the ball. For the fourth straight game, Yale has shut down their opponent in the first quarter.

1:17 p.m. First career touchdown: After an incredible game against Georgetown, versatile halfback John Sheffield ’10 records his first career touchdown against Dartmouth in a five play, 52-yard drive by the Bulldogs with less than a minute left in the first quarter.

1:09 p.m. Safety! An offensive lineman from the Big Green recovered a fumble forced by senior defensive end Jared Hamilton in the Darmouth endoze before being tackled by a Bulldog, resulting in an Eli safety to give Yale a 12-0 lead on the day. Nothing is going right for the Big Green so far.

1:07 p.m. Dartmouth defense: With eight seniors and three juniors, the Big Green has a very experienced defense that has seen a lot of Ivy League action. After suffering through two consecutive 2-8 seasons, the Dartmouth defense hasn’t made things any easier for their offense today.

1:03 p.m. Three and out: The Bulldog defense came up big again, forcing another third and out. The Bulldog offense has favorable field position on their own 39-yard line.

12:59 p.m. First Bulldog Touchdown:Polhemus ran the play-action perfectly, faking the hand-off to Mike McLeod and running the ball into the endzone for the Bulldogs’ first touchdown of the day.

The Elis are up 10-0 with 7:19 left in the first half. The Big Green will need to answer quickly to prevent this game from turning into a blowout.

12:55 p.m. Fumble on the Kickoff: After an unforced fumble by Big Green junior kick returner Philip Galligan, the Bulldogs will again have favorable field position on the Dartmouth 26-yard line.

12:54 p.m. First Points: With 8:19 to go in the first quarter, the Elis are up 3-0. The Bulldog offense wasn’t particuarly impressive on their first drive of the game with only 8 yards on six plays.

12:51 p.m. First Timeout: Bulldogs 3rd and goal from their own 13-yard line. The Elis will need a big play from Polhemus to convert right here. At the very least, Kimball should put at least three points on the board.

12:47 p.m. Big Punt Return: Reid Lathan’s ’10 punt return brought the Bulldogs to the Darthmouth 41-yard line. After a Big Green personal foul, Yale begins their drive at the Dartmouth 21-yard line. No excuse to not put up points on this drive.

12:45 p.m. Paul Rice ’10 on the tackle: Whenever you see a cornerback make a tackle on a running back at the line of scrimmage, you know the defense is well prepared. Rice’s tackle forced a long third down, resulting in a Dartmouth punt.

12:40 p.m. Screen to John Sheffield ’10 for a first down. Polhemus looking to his favorite target early.
