Analysis: At caucuses, 1 in 5 voters were young

WEST CALDWELL, New Jersey, 2:45 p.m. — So you say you want a revolution?

A study released earlier this afternoon by the Center for Information & Research on Civic Learning & Engagement (CIRCLE) reports that youth turnout rose to 13 percent in Iowa at the caucuses last night, a dramatic rise from 2004 (4 percent) and 2000 (3 percent). Numbers-wise, that means that about 20 percent of caucus-goers were under 30.

The salient, if not surprising, statistic is that youth supported Barack Obama and Mike Huckabee by the “largest margins of any age group.”
