    THE NEWS

    • In the aftermath of Sandy Hook, lawmakers passed a bipartisan bill that contained an expanded ban on assault weapons and a limit on the size of ammunition magazines, among others provisions, making Connecticut a national leader in the fight for tighter gun control measures. Top lawmakers and activists from both sides of the aisle lauded the effort as a wide-ranging package of improvements that used the Newtown shooting as an impetus for broader reforms. But it remains to be seen whether the new law will be strong enough to prevent another tragedy like Newtown or achieve the broader reform that advocates sought. Underscoring this effort is another, more fundamental question: Is it possible to prevent a tragedy? Michelle Hackman explores in tomorrow’s News.
    • The development office is working around the clock and the world to secure a number of large gifts as University President Richard Levin’s tenure draws to a close. Vice President for Development Joan O’Neill said she, development staff and administrators have set up more fundraising meetings for the end of the academic year this year than they have in previous years. Efforts are still concentrated on raising money for the capital budget, as well as a few other projects — such as the two new residential colleges — that Levin had hoped to see completed before the end of his tenure. O’Neill said it is unlikely that the University will raise the outstanding costs associated with the construction of the two new colleges and a new biology facility before Levin steps down.
    • In cities across the country, domestic terrorism is a daily reality, said Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter at a talk on Monday afternoon.
Before an audience of students and community members that included Mayor John DeStefano Jr., Nutter said urban areas in the United States are defined by a culture of violence. Nutter, who also serves as president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, emphasized the government’s inability to enact gun safety legislation and presented the “Sandy Hook principles” — a code of conduct for gun-affiliated corporations to protect American citizens that was written by the U.S. Conference of Mayors. Nutter said roughly 30 firearms homicides occur per day in the United States but politicians have not given proper attention to the prevalence and destructive nature of gun violence.

    THE NEWS

    • The stage was crowded Saturday afternoon when the five men vying to become New Haven’s next mayor squared off in the first public debate of the election season. But among the officially announced candidates, only one issue emerged as clearly dividing the rapidly crystallizing field: campaign finance. That’s because the candidates have already made starkly different choices about how to finance their campaigns.
    • This May, students will have yet another summer storage option. Starting this summer, Yale has partnered with All College Storage, a third-party college storage service that picks up students’ boxed belongings from their rooms, stores them during the summer and returns them in the fall.
    • After over 10 months of deliberations, the Yale-NUS inaugural Curriculum Committee released a 90-page report on April 4 detailing the final version of the curriculum to be implemented at the college Yale is establishing with the National University of Singapore. But the report’s content ventured far beyond details of the liberal arts college’s academic curriculum and into the nature of liberal arts education in Southeast Asia and the United States. University President Richard Levin called the curriculum report a “seminal document” for the philosophy of a contemporary liberal arts institution. Aleksandra Gjorgievska investigates.

    THE NEWS

    • On the afternoon of Nov. 8, 2012, faculty and administrators who crowded in the McDougal Center for a special announcement had a hunch that they were about to meet Yale’s next president. So when Provost Peter Salovey appeared with University President Richard Levin and Yale Corporation Senior Fellow Edward Bass ’67 ARC ’72 at the side door, Salovey had to walk through a standing ovation and chorus of cheers in order to reach the podium in the front. No one looked surprised.  The similarities between Levin and Salovey are numerous, but the trajectories of their presidencies could not look more different. Levin is leaving his successor with a Yale unlike the campus he took charge of, which was ringing with calls for a better future. Julia Zorthian takes a close look in tomorrow’s News.
    • Faculty members will participate in a new round of workshops designed to discuss the teaching of undergraduate humanities courses this May as part of a broader focus on a humanities-based education in Yale College. In July, the University received a $1.95 million grant from the Andrew W. Mellon foundation put toward enriching its humanities teaching. Though the grant — which funds an interdisciplinary concentration in the graduate school, a program for post-doctoral students and the faculty workshops — does not directly fund undergraduate coursework, the first set of workshops held last June and August generated course proposals and recommendations for interdisciplinary teaching in the humanities that faculty and administrators hope to implement across Yale College, according to Pamela Schirmeister, associate dean for Yale College and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. Schirmesiter said she hopes that conversation and collaboration will continue in May’s workshops, which will focus on utilizing Yale’s art and library collections in the classroom.
    • In a brief unanimous vote Monday night, the Board of Aldermen redrew the borders of two New Haven wards, bucking the legal recommendation of the city’s top lawyer in the process. The redistricting came well after the city concluded the once-per-decade process of redrawing ward boundaries last year. Nevertheless, and despite the advice of the city’s Corporation Counsel Victor Bolden, the Board of Aldermen voted to move Jocelyn Square, a small neighborhood and a park, to Ward 8, as well as a block near Hillhouse High School to Ward 21. The Board justified the changes by citing an oversight in last year’s redistricting process, and cited the opinion of New Haven attorney Martyn Philpot in defending the legality of the move.

    THE NEWS

    • The atmosphere at the Yale University Art Gallery this December was one of celebration: Following a 14-year construction process, the art museum opened its expanded and renovated spaces to an eager and impressed public. The YUAG’s revitalized design was lauded by art critics, architects and educators alike as a paragon of both architectural and curatorial excellence. What most of the visitors to the YUAG on its reopening day did not know, however, was that the project had once been a hair’s away from coming to a halt. Yanan Wang explores the development of the YUAG in tomorrow’s News.
    • Another protégé of Yale Chief Investment Officer David Swensen is leaving the nest. Last week, Peter Ammon GRD ’05 SOM ’05 — a director at the Yale Investments Office who works under Swensen — was named the University of Pennsylvania’s next chief investment officer last week. When he leaves the YIO this summer, Ammon will join the ranks of several YIO alumni who have gone on to manage investments for prestigious universities and charitable foundations, including Princeton University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Wellesley College, Bowdoin College, the Hilton Foundation and the Rockefeller Foundation. In an interview with the News, Swensen said departures like Ammon’s are “bittersweet” but that he is proud of the YIO’s reputation as a training ground for future leaders in the investing world.
    • Society has entered an age where data is taking over and privacy is becoming less and less important, according to Jacob Ward, the editor in chief of Popular Science magazine. At a talk attended by roughly 30 students on Wednesday afternoon, Ward discussed today’s innovations in the technology that uses data, which is becoming a prominent fixture in every aspect of life from location services to health care. He said privacy is becoming unimportant and people are increasingly more willing to share their information.

    THE NEWS

    • The current student body is the most vibrantly diverse in Yale’s history. Last year, roughly 40 percent of incoming freshmen intended to major in science, technology, engineering or mathematics fields — satisfying the Yale Admissions Office’s target percentage for the first time — and a record-breaking 40 percent of American freshmen identified as minorities. But, inevitably, diversity has come with a steep cost. Amy Wang takes a close look at diversity at Yale in tomorrow’s News.
    • On March 4, a district court dismissed allegations of racial and gender discrimination at the School of Medicine from former employee Anthony Craig, who was terminated less than a year into his residency. Craig, who is African-American, was hired on a one-year contract with Yale New Haven Hospital’s Obstetrics and Gynecology residency program in July 2008 and permanently dismissed in April 2009 for poor performance and lack of improvement. In his suit, Craig claimed that an unidentified physician called him “boy” three times in a 30-minute shift, that he felt uncomfortable socializing in the work environment and that Shaw told him he was being “held to a lower standard” than other physicians. The claims were rejected by a Connecticut district court, but Martyn Philpot, Craig’s attorney, said Craig’s complaint has since been filed in state court.
    • The Board of Alderman received a proposal on Monday to transfer the historic Shubert Theatre from city ownership to a new, not-for-profit management body. The proposed new owner — the Connecticut Association for the Performing Arts (CAPA) — has been running the theatre since 2001. Shubert Theatre administrators hope that an ownership switch will help the theatre fund a much needed renovation. In order for the proposal to be finalized, the Board of Alderman must reach a majority vote in favor of the change.

    THE NEWS

    • When Peter Salovey arrived at Yale as a graduate student in 1981, roughly one in five degrees from Yale College were in science, math or engineering. As he prepares to take the highest University office, that rate is roughly unchanged. In many important ways, the sciences at Yale have not kept pace with Salovey’s rise, and he inherits both the accomplishments and unrealized goals of outgoing University President Richard Levin. Dan Weiner takes a close look at the sciences at Yale in tomorrow’s News.
    • Since Monday, campus has been thrumming with the presence of thousands of people, which can only mean one thing: Bulldog Days is here. Bulldog Days, the annual three-day program to welcome admitted students to the University, runs from Monday to Wednesday. Prefrosh are offered on-campus housing with current undergraduates and are invited to attend activities presented by the Admissions Office in conjunction with various other departments and student extracurricular groups. According to Mark Dunn, director of outreach and recruitment for the Admissions Office, 1,235 high school students registered for Bulldog Days and have arrived with roughly 1,000 parents in tow.
    • During their classes in the School of Management’s new building on Whitney Avenue next year, SOM students will interact with business leaders from overseas — on screen. Though the new building’s glass exterior and infrastructure are complete, SOM administrators and Yale Facilities representatives interviewed said construction is still underway on the classrooms inside. The 16 “innovative” classrooms, which are specifically designed to maximize interactive learning, will contain advanced video equipment allowing faculty and students to communicate with business experts in different locations in real time. The 242,000-square-foot campus — named Edward P. Evans Hall to honor the Yale alumnus whose $50 million gift enabled SOM’s move to Whitney Avenue — will open in January 2014 as scheduled, administrators said.

    • Former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger came to campus Friday afternoon to discuss his experience as a diplomat and his views on international relations. University President Richard Levin and history professor John Gaddis interviewed Kissinger to commemorate the 20th anniversary of his book, Diplomacy, and as part of a two-day conference sponsored by the Jackson Institute for Global Affairs. Kissinger, who served as secretary of state from 1973 to 1977 under former President Richard Nixon during the Cold War, emphasized the connection between the academic study of history and the work of real-world diplomatic policy to affect change.
    • Not a single Republican ran for elected office in New Haven in 2011, and the Yale College Republicans are trying to change that for 2013. In an email to campus Republicans last Thursday, Ben Mallet ’16, who serves as the YCR’s political director, announced plans to field a Republican candidate in November’s Ward 1 aldermanic election. Mallet said the YCR is currently in the process of talking to a “pool of interested people” about entering the race, despite what he admitted were slim chances in a ward that leans heavily Democratic.
    • Danielle Dobosz ’16, the co-captain of the freshman team that represented Morse College at Saturday’s Freshman Olympics, said pressure on her team from Morse sophomores ran high in the wake of the tournament. Morse students, who won the games last year after racking up 265 points, repeated their victory at this year’s tournament by collecting 24 points, three more than the team from Jonathan Edwards College, which finished second. Though the games’ opening ceremonies had to be moved from Friday to Saturday because of bad weather, making Saturday’s events run slightly behind schedule, all team captains and freshmen interviewed said they are mostly satisfied with the way the Freshman Class Council handled the event. Still, three team captains said they think the FCC representatives’ decisions about the outcomes of certain games seemed “arbitrary.”

    THE NEWS

    • For the first time in recent memory, students gathered outside a monthly Yale College faculty meeting to protest. “Was Tolstoy a 97 or a 96?” read the hastily scrawled words on one student’s posterboard. “Yale is stressful enough,” read another. Students stationed themselves outside Davies Auditorium, where the April Yale College faculty meeting took place, to protest a variety of proposals to overhaul Yale’s grading system, including the adoption of a 100-point grading scale and a recommended rubric of grade distributions. The potential grading changes follow decades of steadily rising average GPAs across Yale College: the gentleman’s C, it seemed, had become the gentleman’s B. And after 62 percent of the grades awarded in a single semester were in the A-range last spring, many professors have acknowledged that grading in Yale College is headed in a dangerous direction. Jane Darby Menton investigates grade inflation in tomorrow’s News.
    • The Divinity School’s $800,000 budget deficit has forced Divinity School Dean Gregory Sterling to put some of his plans for the school on hold. Sterling, who came to the Divinity School in August 2012 after serving as dean of the University of Notre Dame’s Graduate School, has been restructuring the school’s administration in an effort to make the school operate in a more cost-effective way and has postponed some of his initial plans to focus on the deficit.
    • A former graduate student who was repeatedly assaulted and raped during her time on campus a decade ago is suing the University for negligence in their security, healthcare and sexual misconduct response. The plaintiff, Natasa Mateljevic GRD ’07, lived on campus and worked in the physics department when she had several abusive interactions with Rafael Crespo, Jr. between December 2002 and December 2004. In the suit, Mateljevic alleges that she notified University members, including faculty and peers, but was not provided adequate protection from harm and was not effectively educated on possible crime reporting mechanisms.

    • Following the recent appointment of the first Latin American pope Jorge Bergoglio, the region is becoming increasingly important in the sphere of global politics, according to former President of the Dominican Republic Leonel Fernandez. Fernandez, who led the Dominican Republic from 1996 to 2000 and 2004 to 2012, addressed a crowd of roughly 100 students and faculty at the Yale Law School on Tuesday. Fernandez spoke about Latin America’s economic growth in recent years and touched on the importance of the Latino community in the United States.
    • Last Saturday, 24 business students from four U.S. business schools participated in the School of Management’s inaugural integrated leadership case competition, where students attempted to solve a simulated scenario that could arise in the business world.
In teams of four, competitors from the Wharton School of Business, Penn State Smeal College of Business, New York University Stern School of Business and SOM had to analyze a “raw” case — an online, interactive case with several multimedia elements that is only used by SOM. Unlike traditional cases, which ask students clearly defined, written problems, “raw” cases require students to locate the problems by themselves after analyzing various primary sources. SOM students, professors and administrators said the case competition — the first one at SOM to include peer business schools — exemplified SOM’s interdisciplinary approach to the business world and highlighted elements of the school’s core curriculum, which aims to combine academic coursework and practical experience.
    • A new website designed by Calhoun Intramural sports secretary Ben Sherman ’13 means Yalies will no longer have to make the long trek to the IM fields to find that a team has forfeited. The website, which officially launched on Thursday, allows students from every college to sign up for the specific games they can attend and sends two email alerts to confirm their participation. Sherman started developing the website during the student-run Hackathon on Feb. 18 and 19 — one week after two Calhoun IM teams he captained were forced to forfeit their last games — and received positive feedback on the website after he submitted it to the YCC’s App Challenge on March 1. Sherman said he designed the website to encourage greater participation in IMs because he thinks more students will participate if they were ensured there would be enough players.

    • When students fill out their ballots during the Yale College Council’s annual elections this week, they will find far fewer choices than in previous years. In fact, they will find three uncontested executive board positions: president, vice president and events director. All three positions have only one declared candidate, even after the YCC postponed the deadline for students to declare their candidacies by 48 hours last week. The uncontested candidates all said they are surprised to be running unopposed and do not think the lack of a true election will impact their work on the Yale College Council next year. But students interviewed said they believe the number of uncontested races detracts from the candidates’ legitimacy.
    • Over 200 students in Yale College have chosen not to seek assistance while intoxicated due to fear of disciplinary repercussions, according to a survey sent out by the Yale College Council in March. The survey, which received 1,762 responses, was designed to supplement discussions by the Yale College Dean’s Office’s Task Force on Alcohol and Other Drugs — a group created in Decemberto make recommendations for improving campus drinking culture — on the clarity of alcohol policies, an issue not considered in other surveys previously sent out by the University. YCC President John Gonzalez ’14 said the survey yielded the same conclusion as the Task Force itself — that students find the disciplinary policies regarding alcohol confusing, which negatively affects their behavior in potentially dangerous alcohol-related situations.
    • Over two months after Ward 10 Alderman Justin Elicker SOM ’10 FES ’10 qualified for the Democracy Fund — New Haven’s public financing system for mayoral candidates — he collected his first check on Friday. Elicker received a check for $9,840 in matching funds for 238 donations, as the Democracy Fund matches the first $25 of eligible donations twice. Though Elicker was eligible to receive these funds when he qualified at the end of January, a provision in the Democracy Fund ordinance stipulates that candidates cannot receive funds until April 1, and Elicker received the first check of any mayoral candidate from the Democracy Fund.

    THE NEWS

    • Sixteen months after a fatal crash at the 2011 Yale-Harvard game left a Massachusetts woman dead, the victim’s estate has filed a negligence suit against the University, the city of New Haven, Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity and others. Nancy Barry, a 30-year-old woman from Massachusetts, died after she was struck by a U-Haul truck during the tailgate before the Yale-Harvard football game on Nov. 19, 2011. Paul T. Edwards, an attorney representing Barry’s estate, filed a lawsuit with the New Haven Superior Court on Friday. The crash “was the result of an accumulation of incredibly bad decisions by several parties,” according to a press release on the suit. Read more about the lawsuit in tomorrow’s News.
    • With the Yale Corporation on the cusp of a complete overturn of its leadership, members of the University’s governing board chose not to kick-start any major new budget or policy proposals during their meeting this weekend. Instead, the fellows discussed initiatives already in progress and approved a capital budget similar to last year’s plan. The meeting marked the penultimate Corporation gathering for both University President Richard Levin and Senior Fellow Edward Bass ’67 ARC ’72, who will be replaced by President-elect Peter Salovey and Margaret Marshall LAW ’72, respectively, on June 30. In light of the upcoming transitions, Levin said the Corporation approved additional funding for ongoing building projects and the financial committee approved a $375 capital budget for the upcoming year.
    • Provost Benjamin Polak will eat dinner twice on April 23: once in honor of a retired economics professor, and once with a group of eight students known as the Provost’s Advisory Committee. Since his appointment as provost in January, Polak said it has been difficult to find time to engage with students because of the new obligations and “crowded” schedule that accompany the role of the University’s second highest administrator. Though Polak has had one meeting this spring with the Provost’s Advisory Committee and one meeting with representatives from Yale College Council, the Graduate Student Assembly and the Graduate and Professional Student Senate, he said this is “not enough” and hopes to make more room in his schedule to converse with students next year.
