The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has jumped on board the Elm City’s efforts to enact education reform through teacher development, giving the city a $111,042 donation on Monday.

The money will go toward creating an “innovative professional development” for teachers through initiatives like the teacher evaluation system TEVAL. Additionally, the $53 million dollar federal grant will fund further teacher development. If New Haven constructs a comprehensive plan sufficient to reach the Gate Foundation’s second stage, they may qualify for an additional $3 million or a $5 million grant.

New Haven and Bridgeport were among a handful of school districts in the country that won planning grants, New Haven Public Schools Assistant Superintendent Garth Harries told the New Haven Independent.
