The new year has brought a new spokeswoman to City Hall.

According to a Monday announcement, Anna Mariotti, president of the City Point Historic District Neighborhood Association, has been appointed New Haven’s new public information officer and director of communications. Mariotti will replace Elizabeth Benton ’04, who began the position in November 2011 but left in November 2012 to work as the communications director for Sen. Richard Blumenthal LAW ’73.

Mariotti, a 2005 graduate of Trinity College, has previously worked for the city council of Hartford, the 2010 census data collection and various nonprofit organizations, including United Way. In a Monday public notice, she said she “love[s] New Haven” and looks forward to applying the skills she gained from her work with local government and nonprofits to her new position.

“Anna comes to us with excellent organization skills and a solid background in local government, having served the City of Hartford so well in the past,” said New Haven Mayor John DeStefano Jr. in the notice. “As we move the city forward, taking on new challenges in education, public safety and job creation, we need to recruit and attract the best and brightest amongst us to help get the job done.”

Mariotti started the position on Monday and serves as the 12th spokesperson for DeStefano since he assumed office in 1994.
