The New Haven Police Department is investigating a motor vehicle accident that left a 55-year-old pedestrian dead at around 5:40 p.m. Thursday afternoon, according to a press release from New Haven Police Captain Anthony Duff.

The accident occurred at the intersection of Temple Street and Chapel Street near the New Haven Green.

According to a Friday morning statement from Duff, the pedestrian, a New Haven woman, was crossing the street when a commercial delivery truck traveling eastbound on Chapel Street struck the pedestrian as it entered the intersection. A 31-year-old Bridgeport man was operating the truck, which continued to travel on Temple Street.

The emergency medical responders present at the scene pronounced the pedestrian dead, according to the Thursday press release. NHPD located the truck on George Street, and the driver is cooperating with the investigation, Duff wrote in the Friday release.

Temple Street and Chapel Street were closed for several hours while officers were conducting an investigation at the scene. The streets are now open.

The investigation by the NHPD Accident Reconstruction Team is ongoing.
