An unidentified woman robbed Ashley’s Ice Cream on York Street just before 8:00 p.m. Tuesday evening, according to a community-wide email from Yale Police Chief Ronnell Higgins.

Higgins wrote that the woman implied that she had a handgun and demanded money from a store employee before fleeing the area.

A New Haven Police Department officer outside Ashley’s on Tuesday night said the unnamed woman, who was white and appeared to be 40 to 50 years old, threatened to shoot the clerk and demanded money.

She took $388 before fleeing on foot down York Street toward Grove Street, said the officer, who declined to give his name because of NHPD protocol. The perpetrator never displayed the weapon, and no one was injured.

Still, the crime’s proximity to the heart of campus worried some students.

“It’s very concerning that something like that could take place so close to where students are living,” Carter Scott ’19 said.

The store, which usually closes at 11:00 p.m. on weekdays, was closed at 9:40 p.m. Tuesday.

The NHPD is investigating the incident.
