This summer gun owners in New Haven can exchange their weapons for gift cards.

That is Mayor Toni Harp’s latest maneuver in what she described as the city’s “peaceful retaliation” against gun violence. Gun buyback events are scheduled for June 28 at the New Haven Police Academy on Sherman Avenue and July 12 at Radio Amor on Portsea Street.

Handguns, shotguns and rifles can be exchanged for a $75 gift card and assault weapons for a $150 gift card, both redeemable at Stop & Shop and Target. The buyback program is underwritten by Yale-New Haven Hospital.

“No questions about the guns will be asked,” Harp said at a Monday press conference, where she was joined by New Haven Police Chief Dean Esserman and city alders. “We simply want to limit the potential for gunfire on New Haven streets.”

The program comes in response to a spate of shootings this spring — several teenagers among the victims.
