THE NEWS

  • The atmosphere at the Yale University Art Gallery this December was one of celebration: Following a 14-year construction process, the art museum opened its expanded and renovated spaces to an eager and impressed public. The YUAG’s revitalized design was lauded by art critics, architects and educators alike as a paragon of both architectural and curatorial excellence. What most of the visitors to the YUAG on its reopening day did not know, however, was that the project had once been a hair’s away from coming to a halt. Yanan Wang explores the development of the YUAG in tomorrow’s News.
  • Another protégé of Yale Chief Investment Officer David Swensen is leaving the nest. Last week, Peter Ammon GRD ’05 SOM ’05 — a director at the Yale Investments Office who works under Swensen — was named the University of Pennsylvania’s next chief investment officer last week. When he leaves the YIO this summer, Ammon will join the ranks of several YIO alumni who have gone on to manage investments for prestigious universities and charitable foundations, including Princeton University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Wellesley College, Bowdoin College, the Hilton Foundation and the Rockefeller Foundation. In an interview with the News, Swensen said departures like Ammon’s are “bittersweet” but that he is proud of the YIO’s reputation as a training ground for future leaders in the investing world.
  • Society has entered an age where data is taking over and privacy is becoming less and less important, according to Jacob Ward, the editor in chief of Popular Science magazine. At a talk attended by roughly 30 students on Wednesday afternoon, Ward discussed today’s innovations in the technology that uses data, which is becoming a prominent fixture in every aspect of life from location services to health care. He said privacy is becoming unimportant and people are increasingly more willing to share their information.
