The Yale Climate & Energy Institute announced on Monday that it is accepting applications for a new undergraduate program in Energy Studies that will commence in fall 2013.

The Energy Studies program will offer students multidisciplinary opportunities to learn about the science, economics and the social impact of energy production. According to the program’s mission statement, it was created to equip students with the skills necessary for leadership in energy-related fields. Students enrolled in the program must complete electives in at least two of the program’s three areas: energy, science, technology and systems; the environmental impact of energy; and energy policy, economics and social issues.

Undergraduates enrolled in the Energy Studies program will be expected to complete the requirements of a Yale College major in addition to their participation in the program. Students will complete the program with a senior project that can take the form of an essay, a group project, or a summer job or internship in an energy-related field.

Admission is by application in the second term of sophomore year, and accepted students will be assigned a YCEI adviser. Completed applications for the major must be submitted by May 15, and accepted students will be notified by June 28.

The Energy Studies program is in final review by Yale College, and a decision is expected to be made by May 2013.
