THE NEWS

  • When students moved back into their dorms this semester, they quickly became aware that their rooms and common rooms had been far from deserted during break. Students in Branford, Jonathan Edwards, Saybrook and Calhoun colleges have reported sightings of mice throughout the colleges since late last semester. Ian Hobbs, facilities superintendent for Branford and JE, said he has received roughly eight separate complaints from the two colleges he oversees, adding that mice typically hide in dorms during the winter to escape the cold. Although some students said they welcome their rodent companions, others have expressed fear and frustration over the creatures’ steady presence.
  • After two days of closures following a record-breaking snowfall that pounded the Elm City over the weekend, University and most city services will resume tomorrow amid ongoing cleanup efforts. City Hall, the New Haven Public Library and Gateway Community College will reopen Wednesday morning as emergency crews work to clear additional streets and widen traffic lanes. New Haven Public Schools and city senior centers will remain closed at least all day Wednesday, and city refuse collection efforts have been canceled for the entire week.
  • Spanish bank Banco Santander entered a formal agreement with the University last week when the bank committed significant funding to the Yale Center for the Study of Globalization. For the next three years, Banco Santander will donate $250,000 a year to the center, according to the center’s Director and former President of Mexico Ernesto Zedillo GRD ’81. The bank will provide the funds through Santander Universities Global Division, a foundation that Banco Santander channels to support progress in education.
