THE NEWS

  • Around 80 students crammed into a classroom in Linsly-Chittenden Hall last Saturday as part of the kickoff meeting for Fossil Free Yale, a campaign to encourage the University to remove its endowment investments in the fossil fuel industry. The campaign has become a national movement and spread to 252 college campuses, including most of the Ivy League. According to environment activist and movement leader Bill McKibben, the movement hopes to convince universities to immediately freeze all new investments in fossil fuel companies and phase out existing investments over the next five years. A “green” portfolio, McKibben said, should be as important to universities as an energy-efficient campus.
  • This summer, as many students set off to work in cities all over the world, others will look toward internship opportunities closer to home. Undergraduate Career Services will offer an increased number of domestic internships this year in several lesser-known geographic areas where students have demonstrated interest and alumni bases are particularly strong, said Jeanine Dames, director of UCS and associate dean of Yale College.
  • Former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan addressed a packed audience yesterday afternoon during a town hall discussion moderated by John Negroponte, a senior fellow at the Jackson Institute and former U.S. ambassador to the UN. During the talk, Annan discussed his experience with the U.N. and hopes about the organization’s future, and fielded questions from the audience and members of the Yale International Relations Association.
