On Saturday, Chelsea Lane ’14 won the Yale Symphony Orchestra’s 2013 William Waite Concerto Competition and will be playing a harp concerto with the YSO next year.

The annual competition draws freshmen, sophomores and juniors every year to audition with 10-minute excerpts from concertos. Three local judges who are not members of the Yale faculty serve as judges in the competition and select a winner. Lane, a music major who directed this year’s YSO Halloween Show, won with Reinhold Glière’s “Concerto for Harp and Orchestra in E-Flat Major.” Glière, a Ukrainian composer who grew up in Soviet Russia, wrote the piece in 1938.

Jennifer Gersten ’16 was named the competition’s runner-up.
