As the snow blankets campus and the Elm City, New Haven officials are prepared to respond but do not expect the snow to pose a major problem.

Chief Administrative Officer Robert Smuts said there are no snow ploughs on the ground yet, as there will likely not be any accumulation of snow except in hilly areas.

He added that in general, officials are focused on salting roads to reduce their slipperiness and ensuring the power does not go out. Hurricane Sandy damaged many power lines in the city, and those that have been temporarily repaired may give out because of the snow.

In addition, trees pose a potential hazard, as some branches that were broken by Sandy could collapse under the snow’s weight.

In general, Smuts said he did not think this was going to be a dangerous storm.

“It’s just going to be cold and gross,” he said.
