- Susan Burhans, a former security education coordinator for the Yale Police Department, filed a lawsuit against the University on Friday on the grounds that her efforts to promote Title IX compliance led to her unfair dismissal. The case, which involves Burhans’ treatment and dismissal as a Yale employee, is framed as a Title IX retaliation suit, according to legal counsel on the suit Wendy Murphy. Though Burhans repeatedly approached Yale officials with concerns, the suit claims that administrators ignored her suggestions and took retaliatory actions, eventually stripping her of her job responsibilities and terminating her position.
- Sixteen-month-old Thomas Bonacci said the word “octopus” for the first time on Saturday while he gazed at a tentacle in the Invertebrate Hall of the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History. Bonacci was one of many attendants at the Peabody’s 10th annual “Fiesta Latina” this weekend. The free festival, open to all New Haven residents, aimed to bring more members of the Latino population to the museum by hosting events in both Spanish and English.
- Conservative commentator Dinesh D’Souza came to Yale on Friday to discuss American exceptionalism and President Barack Obama’s “anti-colonial” agenda. During D’Souza’s visit, which was sponsored by the William F. Buckley, Jr. Program, he participated in a small conversation group with roughly 12 students and gave a lecture to a larger audience. While the seminar focused on religion in America, his lecture — entitled “What’s So Great About America? — drew nearly 80 students, parents and Connecticut residents to William L. Harkness Hall to hear D’Souza speak about the way in which Obama betrayed the American dream.
