Field hockey player Georgia Holland ’14 is one of 30 players in the country to have been selected for USA Field Hockey’s U21 National Team. The Yale midfielder/back will attend the team’s Pan American Training Camp at the University of Maryland in mid-August and vie for a spot on the United States’ Junior Pan American roster.

Twenty-one players have been invited to the training camp, of whom approximately 18 will be chosen to represent the United States in the Junior Pan American Championship from Sept. 10–23 in Guadalajara, Mexico. Holland will miss at least four Yale games if she makes the Pan American roster, including a home match against perennial powerhouse Princeton, which shared the Ivy League title with Yale last season.

Holland is no stranger to international field hockey, as she previously represented the United States on the U19 team for two years. The U21 team falls just below the level of the National Development Team and the National Team currently competing at the Olympics.

Holland wrote in an email to the News that making the U21 National Team is a step towards her ultimate, though still far-off, goal of competing in the Olympics.

“For now I am just going to stay involved in the system, improve as much as I can, keep playing hard, and see where it takes me,” she said. “At Yale, my goal is to help the team win another Ivy League Championship and make it to the NCAA Tournament.”

Although Yale won a share of the Ivy League title last season, Princeton received the conference’s NCAA berth because it had beaten Yale during the regular season.

Holland was named Yale’s player of the year last fall and unanimously selected to the first team All-Ivy League. She scored nine goals and added four assists, leaving her tied for third on the team in points.

Team captain Maddy Sharp ’13 said in an email to the News that Holland is a versatile player who can play almost any position on the field.

“It’s a very impressive achievement to be selected to the U21 National Team,” Sharp said.

The Junior Pan American games will feature teams from 13 different countries. The field hockey championship will take place on Sept. 23, after nearly two weeks of preliminary and classification matches.
