- Though Yale’s academic departments are conducting twice as many searches for new faculty members this year than they did in 2010-’12, most of those programs are not expected to see a net gain in faculty. There are currently 81 authorized faculty searches across the University, primarily intended to fill openings left by departed or retired professors, Provost Peter Salovey said in a Monday email. While the searches span more than 30 departments and programs — including one on West Campus — Salovey said he does not anticipate that the total number of tenured and tenure-track professors in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences will grow significantly from new hires.
- The STEM Teaching Transformation committee was convened last December by University President Richard Levin and Provost Peter Salovey in response to increasing national attention on undergraduate education in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). In its first couple meetings, the committee has brainstormed ways to enhance undergraduate science teaching at Yale, including introducing research-based science courses for freshmen starting next fall and renovating science teaching facilities.
- Despite resistance from city and state officials, beginning today Connecticut is under the federal Secure Communities immigration program. Secure Communities, operated by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, will begin automatically checking fingerprints submitted by police for required FBI background checks against ICE databases in the hopes of deporting violent criminals residing in the country illegally. While Conn. Gov. Dannel Malloy’s office issued a statement yesterday that criticized Secure Communities, New Haven officials said they are still waiting to see how the state will react to the federal program.
