An unmanned dark grey Dodge Intrepid coasted into a parked Volvo XC90 on College Street outside Silliman College around 11:20 p.m. Tuesday, according to Matthew Shafer ’13, who witnessed the incident.

Shafer said he first noticed the Dodge vehicle at the intersection of College and Wall Streets because there was no one driving it, and the driverless car was being tailed by a Yale Police Department vehicle. The Dodge vehicle, which Shafer said was already missing its right rearview mirror before the crash, then drifted slowly into the parked Volvo on the side of the road.

YPD officers at the scene found the Dodge’s key still in the ignition, although officers declined to comment on what they said was an ongoing investigation. As of 11:30 p.m., there were at least 8 YPD vehicles along Wall Street between William L. Harkness Hall and Woodbridge Hall.

Another student who arrived at the scene after the crash said he saw officers examining a wide-rimmed baseball cap outside Sprague Hall. No one was in the Volvo at the time of collision, Shafer said.
