- The Elm City’s homicide rate is at a 17-year high — the 30th murder of 2011 occurred last Sunday night — and part of the city’s solution to its crime problem, officials have announced, lies in a return to community policing.
NHPD Assistant Chief Dean Esserman helped to launch community policing in New Haven when New Haven last saw a murder rate this high about 20 years ago. In recent years as numbers of officers decreased, the tactics of community policing were used less at the department. But today, he returns to do bring the policing approach back again — this time as Chief.
- When Inge Reichenbach retires at the end of June, University officials and donors agree that she will be “going out on top.” Reichenbach was appointed Vice President for Fundraising in 2005 to lead the Yale Tomorrow fundraising campaign, which raise $3.8 billion, $381 million more than the Univiersity’s stated goal, by the campaign’s conclusion in June 2011. Outside of Yale, donors said that Reichenbach’s professionalism and caring personality helped her to secure donations to Yale.
