The illustrious James Bundy, dean of the School of Drama and artistic director of the Yale Repertory Theater, received another feather in his cap on Tuesday — the touring classical theater company The Acting Company announced that Bundy will receive the Company’s John Houseman Award at its annual gala event on Nov. 14.

The Acting Company counts theater heavyweights like Patti LuPone and Kevin Kline among its alumni, and awards the John Houseman Award and the Joan Warburg Humanitarian Award each year.

“The award is given to a recipient who is passionate about training American actors, not just people from London or wherever, to do the classics, as well as keeping the theater alive,” said Gerry Cornez, a Company spokesman.

Bundy has proven from the beginning of his career that he truly embraces the classical theater and is determined to train good classical actors, Cornez said. He added that, in Bundy’s nine and a half years at Yale, he has stood out for putting up a number of shows that have been regional or national premieres.

“He’s done an extraordinary job continuing the illustrious history of the School of Drama […] making the Rep a place at which actors from around the country want to come and perform” Cornez said. He spoke of Bundy as being vibrant and on a continuous path to further excellence.

The committee that chose to give Bundy the award comprised the artistic director of the Company, veteran British actress Angela Lansbury, Michael Kahn of the Shakespeare Theatre in Washington, D.C, director Jack O’Brien and other artists in the theater world. Past recipients include LuPone, O’Brien and director Jeffrey Horowitz.

The Company’s Masquerade Gala will be held Nov. 14 at ritzy New York venue Capitale. David Hyde Pierce (i.e. Niles Crane) and film actor Charles S. Dutton will be among the presenters, and the cast of the Broadway revival of Stephen Schwartz’s “Godspell” will entertain.
